Our guide to Pembrokeshire’s top dog friendly beaches

Clothes, Walking boots, Beach Towels, Sense of Adventure, Children, Dog

You’re all packed and ready to head on your family holiday to Pembrokeshire. We might be biased but we believe Pembrokeshire is the perfect destination for a pooch friendly family holiday. We know how important your dogs are to you, they’re part of the family, and no one likes waving goodbye to their beloved pet at the kennels back home.

As well as our dog friendly cottages, Pembrokeshire is packed with dog friendly places to visit and explore and here we’re going to take you through a guide to some of the beaches to visit with your four legged friend.
Our beloved coastline of Pembrokeshire is blessed with over 50 beaches, and all of them await you and your dog. Yes there are some limitations at certain times of the year (1st of May to end of September) but don’t be put off by this as there are still plenty of fantastic beaches to choose from.

Here’s Experience Môr’s quick guide:

Cwm yr Eglwys (only 2.4 miles away from our Newport – Penmynydd Uchaf cottage and 5.7 miles from our Newport – Cwm Tawel cottages)

Dog Friendly: All year round
Beach Type: Sandy and shingle
Facilities: Toilets, Slipway, Car Parking in village

A picturesque sandy and shingle cove with rock pools at low tide. On the beach front there is the end wall of a chapel, the remainder was washed away by storms back in 1859. With dogs welcome all year round Cwm yr Eglwys is a must visit.

Newport Sands (only 2.6 miles away from our Newport – Cwm Tawel cottages)

Dog Friendly: All year round

Beach Type: Sandy

Facilities: Car Park, Toilets, Cafe, Lifeguard, Safe Swimming Zone, Water sports

At a mile and a half long at the mouth of the River Nevern, this is a dune backed sandy beach and a very popular spot for water sports. If you’re planning a visit, check out the tide times to make sure that there’s plenty of beach for you and your dog to run around on.

Pwllgwaelod Beach (only 2.0 miles away from our Newport – Penmynydd Uchaf cottage and 6.2 miles from our Newport – Cwm Tawel cottages)

Dog Friendly: All year round

Beach Type: Sand and Shingle

Facilities: Toilets and there is a pub nearby

Pwllgwaelod Beach is a small sandy beach that is encircled by cliffs with views across the water to Fishguard Harbour. The cliffs offer some protection from the wind and at low tide there is a good stretch of sand.
The beach is also one of the starting points of a trek that stretches for three miles following the Pembrokeshire National Park Coastal Footpath which follows the coast around to Dinas Head.

Goodwick Sands Beach (6.8 miles away from our Newport – Penmynydd Uchaf cottage)

Dog Friendly: Restirctions apply to the northern end of the beach between 1st May and 30th September.

Beach Type: Sandy

Facilities: Toilets, Slipway, other facilities on shore include cafe, disabled facilities and shop.

A nice sandy beach with lots of facilities around the area with a bonus of being able to see dolphin.

Poppit Sands (8.8 miles away from our Newport – Cwm Tawel cottages)

Dog Friendly: Large areas of the beach are dog friendly all year round with restrictions only on the Western end of beach between 1st of May – 30th of September.
Beach Type: Sandy, backed with dunes
Facilities: Toilets, Cafe, Car Parking, Lifeguard, Water sports

Located at the mouth of the Teifi Estuary, Poppit Sands is a vast sandy beach with the bonus of a large amount of it being dog friendly all year round. It is also located at the start (or end) of the Pembrokeshire coastal path.

Aberbach Beach (14.8 miles away from our Newport – Penmynydd Uchaf cottage)

Dog Friendly: All year around

Beach Type: Sand and Pebble

Facilities: No facilities however there are some facilities on shore such as pubs, hotels etc.

This small pebble cove sits at the bottom of a wooded valley. As the tide goes out, the beach becomes progressively more sandy. However, as the tide returns the beach shrinks rapidly.

Porthgain, near St Davids (16.5 miles away from our Newport – Penmynydd Uchaf cottage)

Dog Friendly: All year round

Beach Type: Harbour

Facilities: Free parking in village, Pub, Restaurant

Porthgain is located between St David’s and Fishguard and is a lovely little harbour to visit. From here you can access the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and head towards Abereiddy passing Traeth Llyfn on the way. A great day out for the whole family all year round.

Newgale Sands near St Davids  (18.4 miles away from our Newport – Penmynydd Uchaf cottage)

Dog Friendly: Southern section dog friendly all year round with restrictions between 1st May – 30th September on the Northern third of the beach.
Beach Type: Sandy with a pebble bank
Facilities: Car Parking, Pub, Cafe, Toilets (disabled), Lifeguard, Surfing (hire and school), Kayaking.

Another wonder of a beach at 2 miles long (even more at low tide), it’s a favourite for water sports and a favourite with our 4 legged friends. The Southern part of the beach is dog friendly all year round with some restriction during the peak season on the Northern section, but there’s still plenty of beach to explore so no need to worry.

Pointz Castle (also known as Porthmynawyd) (19.2 miles away from our Newport – Penmynydd Uchaf cottage)
Dog Friendly: All year round
Beach type: Sandy
Facilities: Reached by a footpath from Pointz Castle farm. There is parking in lay-bys on the A487

A real secret cove and of the beaten track, Pointz Castle is dog friendly all year round. Ac-cessible by footpath from Pointz Castle farm, it’s best to head here at low tide where you can explore a cave and have more beach to run around on.

Solva and Gwadn beach (21.1 miles away from our Newport – Penmynydd Uchaf cottage)

Dog Friendly: All year round
Beach type: Harbour with access to Gwadn beach
Facilities: Car Parking and Toilets at Solva harbour

Solva harbour is a great place to visit and sit and watch the world go by, and at low tide you can walk along the headland to the dog friendly beach of Gwadn, a real hidden gem. At high tide there is still the option of accessing Gwadn beach along the coastal path – worth the walk with great views.

Porthmelgan Beach near Whitesands Bay  (22 miles away from our Newport – Penmynydd Uchaf cottage)

Dog Friendly: All year round
Beach Type: Pebble and Sandy
Facilities: No facilities at Porthmelgan however there is a Car Park, Lifeguard, Surfing and Toilets at Whitesands

A great alternative to Whitesands Bay (which has some limitations in peak season), Porthmelgan is a secluded beach accessible only by foot from Whitesands. We know you’ll agree that a visit here is a great way to enjoy a coastal walk while heading to the beach.

Broad Haven, near Haverfordwest (25.9 miles away from our Newport – Penmynydd Uchaf cottage)

Dog Friendly: Restrictions between 1st May – 30th September on the central section of the beach.
Beach Type: Sandy
Facilities: Car Parking, Pub, Cafe, Toilets, Lifeguard, Water sports

A vast sandy beach at low tide this is a favourite with many. There is also the option of heading to the smaller beach of Little Haven (dog friendly all year round) which can be accessed by walking along the beach at low tide or along the coast path at high tide.

Beach and Coast Doggy etiquette

  • Please respect other people and clear up any mess after your dog and place in a bin.
  • Dogs should be kept on a lead on the coast path and please take care when entering fields with livestock.
  • Take time to read notice boards on beaches highlighting restricted areas, these will be clearly signed to help you out.

So you’ve decided what beach to head to now take a look at our dog friendly cottages, outdoor warm showers, large enclosed gardens, and boot rooms to brush down the dog – just some of the facilities on offer with us at Experience Môr. We look forward to offering you a Warm Welsh Croeso!

Our experience of Glandwr can be summed up in 3 letters...WOW!! We had the warmest of welcomes from Jonty and Tally (the lab), the little touches like the wine, champagne and fully stocked fruit bowl made it all seem a little more special! Excellent communication with both Jonty and Daniel before and during our stay! The cottage is rural, peaceful and basically a little slice of heaven...you will not want to leave! It is equipped with everything you would need for a relaxing and enjoyable break away. Each bedroom has its own bath/shower room which is ideal if there is a large group of you! Hot tub was amazing too.
